Q&A with Viggo Mortensen | TIFF Stay-at-Home Cinema | TIFF 2020
The magic of filmgoing together, at home. TIFF Stay-at-Home Cinema hosted a virtual Q&A with Viggo Mortensen and Cameron Bailey on Wednesday, April 3, on Instagram Live (@tiff_net), before a screening of CAPTAIN FANTASTIC.
We want to share the magic of filmgoing together while we watch from home. With this in mind, TIFF has curated a series from Crave’s extensive selection of titles, accompanied by conversations with special guests via Instagram. Learn more on http://TIFF.net/stayathome.
The second feature from writer-director Matt Ross (best known for his acting roles on TV’s Big Love and Silicon Valley) offers a delightfully offbeat and heartwarming tale about love, duty, and family. Ben and Leslie Cash (Viggo Mortensen and Trin Miller) are dedicated nonconformists who have chosen to raise their six kids deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, where they have been taught to live off the land, drilled in physical fitness, instilled with advanced knowledge of philosophy, literature, and geopolitics, and annually celebrate “Noam Chomsky Day” in place of Christmas. When tragedy suddenly strikes, Ben and his brood are forced to make a cross-country voyage in their camper van — and as his children see more of the wider world, and his rebellious eldest son becomes determined to march to the beat of his own drum, Ben begins to question whether it is right to return them to his self-fashioned countercultural utopia. Centred on Mortensen’s marvellous (and surprising) comic turn as the back-to-basics patriarch, and featuring a stellar supporting cast that includes Kathryn Hahn, Steve Zahn, and Frank Langella, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC is an irresistible comedy-drama that considers what truly makes a family.
