WHY DID THEY HATE ST PANCRAS STATION? And Why Do I Love The British Library?
#LondonModernArchitecture #StPancrasStation
My first video from London is an architectural appreciation of the British Library and the neighbouring St Pancras Station with a brief look at the Francis Crick Insititute.
London's St Pancras station was nearly demolished in the 1960s. The British Transport Commission had already demolished the Euston Arch and wanted also to get rid of the magnificent St Pancras with its huge neo-Gothic frontage. Thanks to the efforts of Sir John Betjeman, Niklaus Pevsner, the Victorian Society and others, the building was saved and four decades later became London's Eurostar terminal.
I ask the question: Why was traditional architecture hated by some during the 1960s? I give an explanation that's based on my own experience as someone who has been interested in architecture since childhood.
This feature was a diversion from my normal path, for the first time looking at architecture in London. A number of commenters have suggested that I should make videos about London and this is the first one. I can’t ignore London as a subject, as it's very relevant to the themes of this channel. There is the potential to reach a wider audience and in doing so to help promote Manchester, Liverpool and other cities that don't receive as much attention as London.
I have always taken an interest in London architecture, particularly London's modern architecture and have photographed quite a few of its most famous buildings.
I’d like to explore more of London’s development areas and famous modern landmarks in future videos.
