Learn the tin whistle cut ornament and add it to Down by the Sally Gardens
Add Spark and Rhythm to Your Tin Whistle Playing with the Cut Ornament!
In this lesson, I’ll guide you through learning the cut – a crisp, percussive ornament that adds brightness and rhythmic drive to your Irish tin whistle playing. We'll be adding the cut to the lovely tune Down by the Sally Gardens, helping you bring more energy and character to your playing.
This beginner-friendly tutorial includes clear, step-by-step instructions, complete with voice-over, animation, and video footage. I’ve designed it to make learning as clear and enjoyable as possible.
If you’re not familiar with Down by the Sally Gardens, check out my other video where I walk through the melody from scratch: • Learn 'Down by the Sally Gardens' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IapSPVO0q5Y
I have also created a video introducing the slide ornament into Down by the Sally Gardens. You can find that video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SQSBaAY10U&t=2s
I have also created another video that introduces 4 ornaments to the tune, the slide, the cut, the bounce and the flourish. You can find that video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbfJqqcovaU&t=1s
You’ll notice I use horizontal lines in the tab to show how long to hold each note – I find this makes the rhythm much clearer for beginners than traditional tabs. Let me know in the comments if this helps! Also, a plus sign under a note means it’s in the higher octave – so give it a stronger breath.
Just a reminder: I’m still a beginner myself. I’ve found it helpful to add ornaments in set places while I’m learning, but I know ornament placement is very personal. So feel free to experiment and move the cut to where it feels right for you – or leave it out entirely if it doesn’t suit your version of the tune.
I’m still finding my feet with voice-overs and video editing, so please forgive any rough edges! Hopefully, the content is useful, even if the production is still a work in progress.
If this video helps you, please give it a like – it means a lot! And consider subscribing for more beginner-friendly Irish tin whistle tutorials.
Happy Whistling!
