Koko's Quest for a Baby

Koko has been telling us for some time, via sign language and play behavior, that she wants to raise a baby gorilla and have a larger family. Helping Koko adopt a baby and some female companions to complete a family group with her male companion, Ndume, has thus become one of the Gorilla Foundation's primary initiatives. There are many indications that Koko would teach her baby to sign, creating exciting possibilities for new avenues of interspecies communication research, and enabling breakthroughs in captive gorilla care management and conservation. Koko would then be able to transmit both her culture and her ambassadorial responsibilities to the next generation.
