Mill Vice Stop From Leftover Parts #shorts
This little project has been on my to-do list since Olly over at @ollysworkshop suggested it on day 19 of his excellent 2022 Workshop Advent Calendar series [see here: https://youtu.be/xb31WP-s7xk ]
Check out his channel. There’s some good stuff in there 👍 🇬🇧
It’s a straightforward build, and really only involves drilling a couple of holes and shortening a couple of rods. Just enough to fit into a 60 second #SHORT
The hardware I chose has relatively thin rods, so a certain amount of ‘feel’ is needed when in use to avoid the springiness of the stop resulting in positional errors. That said, it’s already proven itself useful for the type of light work I do. If I were throwing in heavy lumps of steel on a rapid production turnaround, clearly something much more rigid would be required.

This was really a bit of a test project using a different camera.
This #SHORT was recorded on a Panasonic HC-X920, which on paper is (possibly) a better camera than the HDC-HS700 I usually use. On the plus side the X920 has larger back illuminated sensors, on the minus side it is also slightly larger and slightly heavier. It also has something of a cheap plastic feel when compared to the HDC-HS700. And doesn’t have an infra red remote (almost essential for starting a recording without introducing shake -its snazzy WiFi remote is about as much use as a chocolate teapot) and using manual modes is a bit more fiddly. The on-board mic has a tenancy to pickup camera fan noise when when recording near-silence. That said, white balance seems to be more consistent with my LED lights, and the back focus seems more accurate so zooming in to fine tune the focus and then zooming out again is more reliable. The jury is out on whether the picture quality trumps the niggles.
Both models are over a decade old, and there are doubtless better more contemporary cameras out there. But these two produce good (enough) quality in a convenient size and whilst not throwaway money, are cheap enough to risk in the relatively hazardous workshop environment.
