▶ One of the First Films Ever Made: Duel au Pistolet (1896)
This short film, shot in 1896 by French cinematographer Gabriel Veyre, reconstructs a dramatic historical event: a duel in Chapultepec Park, Mexico City, which took place in September 1894. The duel was fought between Colonel Francisco Romero and José Vera Estegui, the Postmaster General, who ultimately emerged victorious.
Gabriel Veyre, a pioneering filmmaker associated with the Lumière brothers, travelled extensively in Mexico and Latin America, producing some of the earliest motion pictures in the region. While the duel depicted here is a staged reenactment rather than actual footage of the event, it reflects early cinema’s fascination with capturing and dramatizing current events for audiences.
Staged films like this were part of the “actuality” and re-enactment genre, offering viewers both a sense of realism and theatrical drama. The setting in Chapultepec Park provides a vivid backdrop, highlighting Mexico City’s historical and social context in the late 19th century.
This short film stands as an early example of how cinema could educate, entertain, and preserve historical memory, showing the interplay between news, spectacle, and the emerging art of motion pictures.
