Syncope, or blackout to the layperson, is common with well over half a million people presenting acutely to UK Emergency Departments and Acute Medical Units every year, many by ambulance. Although many events are due to reflex (simple faint) or postural causes, around 1 in 10 patients will have a serious cardiovascular problem causing their episode. Diagnosing this is difficult as patients have usually recovered by the time they are assessed, and their examination and ECG may both be normal. This talk will focus on everything you need to know about how to assess the patient who presents acutely with syncope, the key things not to miss, a suggested systematic approach to assessment, and finally, will finish with what the future perhaps holds for this patient group.
Biography:
Matt is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Edinburgh University and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, and a Consultant and NRS Fellow at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He is Research Director of EMERGE, the Emergency Medicine Research Group Edinburgh, a multidisciplinary clinical research group delivering frontline applied health research which is the largest recruiter of EM research participants in the UK. Matt’s research work focuses broadly on Emergency Medicine research in challenging areas of acute care such as syncope, palpitations, and now aortic dissection as well as the innovative use of novel technology. He has published over 120 papers and personally been awarded over £5.4 million in research grants. When not a work, Matt is a below average runner, a passable golfer, and an undistinguished cellist in The Really Terrible Orchestra.
