John Humphrey and Jon Maturan react to Cars 2 (2011), Pixar’s globe-trotting spy adventure sequel that shifts gears from small-town racing drama to full-blown international espionage. Directed by John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug’s Life) and co-directed by Brad Lewis (Ratatouille producer), the film takes Lightning McQueen and Mater far beyond Radiator Springs and into a high-stakes conspiracy tied to the World Grand Prix.
Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers, Loki) returns as Lightning McQueen, now competing in the World Grand Prix against international rivals like Francesco Bernoulli, voiced by John Turturro (The Big Lebowski, Transformers). But the spotlight surprisingly shifts to Mater, voiced by Larry the Cable Guy (Blue Collar Comedy Tour, Cars), who gets mistaken for an American spy and becomes entangled in a secret mission involving British intelligence agents Finn McMissile, voiced by Michael Caine (The Dark Knight, Inception), and Holley Shiftwell, voiced by Emily Mortimer (Shutter Island, Mary Poppins Returns).
The film features some of Pixar’s most ambitious action sequences, including the explosive Tokyo street race, the spy infiltration at the Porto Corsa party, the oil rig showdown, and the chaotic London finale with bombs hidden in plain sight. Blending Bond-inspired espionage with high-speed racing spectacle, Cars 2 remains one of Pixar’s most debated entries due to its tonal shift, heavy focus on Mater, and departure from the emotional core of the original film.
