The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock (adaptation) (2002)

This was one of my mid-year video projects at SVA. It's a fairly sincere (maybe embarrassingly personal) loose adaptation of the poem The Love Song Of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot. But mainly it is a fairly autobiographical short about me being awkward at parties, something I've gotten a lot of mileage out of in my creative endeavors.

It stars Sam Brown as Prufrock, and Dave Fox as his buddy. Both were really dedicated to helping me do something kind of "serious" for once, rather than goofing around. I thought their performances were really great.

All our college friends at the time make appearances (I'm not sure if they want to be named/google-able in this), but notably Trevor Moore, who we recently lost, and I can't believe I just typed that, cameos as "Bowtie Guy", based on a real person at a party I went to once who was unbelievably annoying. He wore a red bowtie and was trying to be the clown of the party.

I told Trevor "try to be UNfunny", and somehow he managed to do that, but hilariously. Timmy Williams plays his little twin sidekick, which was not something I planned and I don't remember how that happened, but I love it. Everything Trevor is doing was improvised, I don't quite recall giving him specific instructions.

It's a weird one for me, very personal, and now full of sadness and conflicting feelings. I'm not sure it quite works, but it does mean a lot to me. Hope you like it.

(As for the thumbnail, I remember when me and Sam watched the footage, he said something like "that's the poster." Now it is.)
