How Thin Can You Lay a Wax Strip
How Thin Can You Lay A Wax Strip? This will vary greatly depending on what wax you’re using.
The first thing to keep in mind is that not all wax is the same. In fact, waxes can be and are very different depending on their ingredients. You cannot use and lay waxes the same. The base ingredients in waxes will cause those waxes to either be elastic or not.
Elastic waxes allow you to lay them super thin. You can also apply multiple strips at a time without any fear of them breaking upon removal. I call these “Lay, Lay, Lay” waxes. For example, Mermaid Wax Signature Series and Experimental Series need to be laid very thin. If you lay them too thick, it will take longer for them to cool so that you can remove them. It’s also just wasteful as they can be spread so incredibly thin without any fear of them breaking. So if you lay them thin like they’re intended, you can remove them fairly quickly.
Here I’ll lay Signature Series thick as well as thin so you can see the difference and why it’s so much more beneficial to lay them thin.
Non elastic waxes (for example: Mermaid Wax Pro Series- Poseidon, Calypso and Medusa, as well as other brands like Starpil blue and pink film hard wax, Miss Cire You Blue My Mind hard wax or Mademoiselle hard wax, Cirepil blue film hard wax, Berodin blue film hard wax -need to be laid one or two strips at a time. Then you need to remove them immediately, otherwise they will break upon removal. These waxes also need to be laid thicker than elastic waxes since they’re not elastic. I call these “Strip and Rip” waxes.
Now I’ll show you the result if I lay a wax strip with Pro Series thick and thin. You’ll see that if I lay Pro Series too thin, the wax will end up breaking upon removal.
So what’s the benefit of being aware and cautious when selecting the type of wax you want to use in your salon or at home on yourself? If you can lay the wax thin, you use less wax per service. Using less wax per service, means you save money on each service. You’ll also save money because the chance of the wax breaking upon removing and snapping the hairs is going to drastically reduce. Everytime you break hairs, you’ll have to go over that same area again and hope you’re still able to get them out on the second pass.
Personally, I only use elastic waxes (or Lay, Lay, Lay) waxes because I like to lay 3-5 strips at a time. If I used a “Strip and Rip” wax, it would show down my service so much, which results in me making less money since I can’t fit in the same number of clients every day. Also, I would end up going through more wax for the same amount of services, which would also cause me to lose money.
Everyone’s waxing style is different so I always recommend to try multiple waxes and see which one fits your style and needs the best.
