STEP 4a: Deleting maps on your mobile device with OsmAnd

One minor problem I ran into after following these steps for deleting and uploading an updated map (same file name but larger size). All seemed to work for a while, but then the overlay map disappeared. Turns out I had this map selected as the current Overlay map. I assume that the change in map dimensions caused an issue in the app.

Simple fix was to kill the app and restart it. This didn't occur to me out in the mountains when I ran into the problem.

To prevent this in the future, make sure to either turn off the map layer the file you're updating is on or select a different map file before updating the map.

I find that I can use Zoom Level 17 in the USGS National Map Viewer for creating these off-line hillshade maps. This results in ~1 meter/pixel resolution in the .sqlitedb file that matches the spatial resolution reported in the map viewer.

Not sure when the landscape mode came into play, but I had noticed it a while back. When you rotate your device, there's a rotate screen icon at the bottom of the screen. If you click that icon, it'll flip into the desired orientation and stay there until you change it.

For screen recording, I first tried the built-in Android screen recorder but that will capture in portrait mode dimensions with the landscape screen inside that, so you have to crop the video and you lose a lot of resolution, as happened in this video. Instead, I found that AZ Screen Recorder will record in full resolution in landscape mode if you start recording in landscape mode.

You can remove map sources at Settings Menu:
- Download Maps:
- Local:
- Online and cached tile maps:
- Three dots menu, or simply click on the name of the map
- Select Delete.

To update a map, delete it first, then upload a new copy to avoid having multiple files of the same name.
