In this video, I'll take you through the top10 biggest benefits of the first step act and how it helps federal inmates. It also helps people who were recently indicted and will be Federal Prisoners in the future.

The first step act may affect you.

1.Reduces crack sentences that were handed down before 2010
Eligible people need to petition for release and go before a judge

2. Curbs mandatory minimums. The safety valve is easier to get. About 2000 extra people per year will be exempt from the mandatory minimum.
Will shrink some MMs for drugs from 20 years to 15 years.
Federal 3 strikes will go from Life to 25 years.
This isn’t retroactive

3. Place people within 500 driving miles to their families.

4. Match prisoners with appropriate rehab services.

5. 54 days per year of good time instead of 47. (retroactive) The prison was cheating and only giving good days for time actually served, not for your sentence. People were losing a week per year.

6. Inmates can earn 10 days of halfway house for every 30 days in rehab programs. 12 months max halfway house.

7.. More funding for job training and educational programs.
Churches and other outside groups get easier access to prisons programming

8.Cant shackle preg prisoners.
Provide free tampons to females.

9. Greater use of halfway house and home confinement.

10. Expands the eligibility for the compassionate release of elderly and terminally ill people.
The First Step Act is a great step in criminal justice reform. This prison reform bill deals with mandatory minimums, halfway house time, compassionate release, prison programs, and good time. Donald Trump first step act and mitch McConnell first step act is a funny thing to say, but they helped it happen. People really needed the federal prison first step act and it's here. To put it short this is a good development in sentencing reform.
