India’s 114 Rafale Deal Could Start Fighter Jet Engine Manufacturing in India | HAL–Safran M88

In this video, we explain how the Rafale expansion could lead to local assembly and partial manufacturing of the Safran M88 fighter jet engine in India, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) emerging as a key industrial partner. From the HAL–Safran MoU signed in 2021 to recent agreements involving LEAP commercial engine components, this collaboration shows how India is slowly building deep capabilities in high-precision aerospace manufacturing.

We also break down why engine manufacturing matters more than aircraft numbers. A fleet of 114 Rafale jets would require 250+ engines including spares, and over decades of service, the total engine demand could nearly double due to overhauls and replacements. Local engine assembly would reduce dependency on foreign support, strengthen operational readiness, and support India’s long-term defence and industrial goals.
