Islamic Jihad praises Jerusalem attack
(14 Jul 2017) The leader of the Islamic Jihad movement in Gaza City on Friday welcomed the attack in Jerusalem in which three Palestinian assailants killed two Israeli policemen inside a holy site before being shot dead.
Khaled Al-Batsh made the remarks at a protest after prayers at a mosque in Gaza City, saying that the responsibility for the attack lay with Israel's "arbitrary, punitive procedures" towards Palestinians.
Dozens of Islamic Jihad supporters joined the protest to celebrate the attack.
Earlier, three Palestinian assailants opened fire on Israeli police from inside a major holy site, Israeli police said.
The compound, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount, is the holiest site in Judaism and the third-holiest in Islam.
The site has been a flashpoint for violence in the past, with friction there sparking major rounds of Israeli-Palestinian violence, including a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation that lasted several years.
Israel closed the site for further weapons checks.
The rare closure meant a cancellation of noon prayers, which typically draw tens of thousands of Muslims from Israel and the Israeli-occupied West Bank to the compound on Fridays.
