Malabar Cuisine: Historical and literary perspectives
In this conversation with Dr Azeez Tharuvana, Prof. Yasser Arafath talks about the various references to food in early Mappila literature of Malabar. He talks about how the gastronomical habits of a particular region is affected and determined by various factors of religion, caste, economy etc. and vice versa. Food over centuries has grown to be central to Mappila discourses and by the 20th century it even began to be used as a major tool by the Mappilas to assert their identity as a community.
