Mainstream Radio REFUSED to Play This Rock Band...Still Sold 300 Million Records | Professor of Rock

It was the final single in the storied career of one of the most hard-hitting, epic rock bands ever assembled. Fool in the Rain by Led Zeppelin. For a decade Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones turned the world upside-down and inside out with their cutting-edge, all-out rock compositions… But they also did it with tracks that undercut audience expectations. And that is exactly what this song did. It came from their final proper studio album… In Through the Out Door… Fool in the Rain sounded like nothing else in the band’s catalog, and was so far out in left field, that honestly it was a gamble to release it. But the band felt like it would be their biggest hit. So would this unconventional song completely backfire and kill their momentum? Or would it be a huge hit…Find out NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

So it’s time for another edition of our series Career Suicide. Man, we haven’t done one of these in long time. On this show, we break down an artist, song, or album that took a massive risk. And maybe the gamble paid off. Or maybe it didn’t. Maybe it was a complete train wreck. In this show, it really could go either way. But whatever the outcome, it’s a guaranteed great story. On previous episodes we have covered Refugee by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Let’s Dance by David Bowie, and Lullaby by The Cure.

However, for today’s installment, we’re coming back to the lords of rock, you know we love talking about them on this channel… Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. It’s the mighty Led Zeppelin and a song that definitely went in a risky new direction. As a matter of fact, the whole album was a risk. Viewed by some as an ill-fated overhaul of Zeppelin’s roots and by others as the next step in this epic band’s evolution… it’s Fool in the Rain from 1979’s In Through the Out Door.

So by 1977 Led Zeppelin had released 7 multi-platinum studio albums, five of which topped the charts in America. Having created some of the hardest-hitting tracks in the 60s and 70s, Zeppelin had already secured their legacy as rock’s most formidable band. That was never in doubt. But leading up to 1976’s Presence and afterwards, the band really went through the wringer. For instance, Robert Plant, while on holiday in Rhodes, Greece with his family sustained multiple injuries in a horrible car accident. Robert came away with a broken ankle and elbow, leaving him wheelchair-bound for a time. Plant’s injuries brought the rock juggernaut’s touring plans to a halt. And the band wouldn’t schedule another one until February 1977, when they intended to kick off their 11th North American tour in Texas. It was going to be record-breaking
