Key things to note:

Short strokes are more aggressive and also provides a more consistent angle and do not cause scratches and "swarf polishing". Apply even pressure through out the sharpening from tip to heel, section by section. This will help in attaining a consistent angle throughout the sharpening on both sides of the blade.
