SPQR A History of Ancient Rome By Mary Beard

SPQR
A History of Ancient Rome
Mary Beard
How I consumed the book: Audible
Short Recap: SPQR, which stands for Senatus Populus Que Romanus, The Senate and People of Rome covers the first half of the Roman Empire. What is still mind-blowing to me, is that this book covers 1,000 years and is only halfway through Rome’s full history. The rise of Rome was nothing that would have been assumed when it was founded in 753 BC by Romulus and Remus according to legend. Even 150 years later it was just a town by the Tiber River, but it would grow into the mightiest empire the world had ever seen.
We know of Caesar as possibly it’s most famous leader, but what many people don’t realize is that Rome fought many civil wars throughout its history. This includes the war between Caesar and Pompey which Julius Caesar obviously won, but it also includes the Spartacus slave revolt. Somehow, Rome managed to remain in control and grow its empire all while facing internal conflict.
The history of Rome overlapped with Alexander the Great, Rome defeated Hannibal and the end of the Roman Empire ushered in the dark ages. Even to this day history of Ancient Rome is still being uncovered, and our politicians reach back to ancient times. The direct impact of Ancient Rome can be seen clearly today in Europe where cities like London, Paris, Zurich, Barcelona, and Vienna are capital cities because they were founded by Rome or were Roman provincial capitals. The touch of Ancient Rome in our modern world is difficult to understate.
Application to Business: Rome was a small town next to a river, that grew up to dominate the world. If that doesn’t give you hope that even the smallest businesses or careers can grow into something spectacular, then what will? Though it had many, many issues Rome understood the need to grow as does business. Rome also understood the need to put down roads so that it could march troops and supplies, which can remind us to prepare in advance rather than jumping and just having to hope.
Application to Life: If Rome was a family it would be a very dysfunctional yet successful family. The Roman civil wars were often more devastating than the external threats. It is helpful to remember in life that our biggest adversary is often ourselves.

Recommendation: Worth the Read (If you enjoy history and Rome fascinates you)
