Chavittu Natakam is a Maritime theatre tradition of Kerala developed and performed at the coastal region of Kerala. The Portuguese missionaries who came to Kerala in South India in the sixteenth century brought the basics of this art form to Kerala. It merged with local performance modes and developed a new native theatre form with biblical themes as contents, western costumes in outfit, all aesthetic elements of European opera, additionally the facial expression.
