The Soviet Union, officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was established in 1922 after the Bolshevik Revolution led by Vladimir Lenin and the subsequent Russian Civil War. It emerged from the ruins of the Russian Empire as the world’s first large-scale socialist state, built on Marxist-Leninist ideology and governed by a single-party system under the Communist Party. Under Joseph Stalin, the USSR underwent rapid industrialization and forced collectivization, becoming a major global power despite immense human suffering and political repression. After playing a decisive role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War II, the Soviet Union entered into a prolonged geopolitical rivalry with the United States known as the Cold War. Marked by military competition, ideological conflict, and the space race, this era defined much of the 20th century. The Soviet Union ultimately dissolved in 1991 due to economic stagnation, political reforms, and nationalist movements within its republics, bringing an end to nearly seven decades of communist rule.

The State Anthem of the Soviet Union was the national anthem of the USSR from 1944 until 1991, replacing the earlier revolutionary song “The Internationale.” Its powerful music was composed by Alexander Vasilyevich Alexandrov, and the original lyrics were written by Sergey Mikhalkov and El-Registan during World War II. After Stalin’s death and the following de-Stalinization period, the anthem was performed without lyrics for about twenty years until revised words (omitting references to Stalin) were adopted in 1977.

Even after the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, the same melody lived on: a decade later it was adopted with new lyrics as the national anthem of the Russian Federation
