Fridericus Rex Grenadiermarsch [German Soldier Song]

Frederick II of Prussia, often called Frederick the Great, was one of the most influential monarchs of 18th-century Europe, ruling Prussia from 1740 until his death in 1786. A brilliant military strategist, he expanded Prussian territory through key victories in the Silesian Wars and the Seven Years’ War, establishing Prussia as a major European power. Beyond warfare, he was an enlightened absolutist who promoted religious tolerance, legal reform, and patronage of the arts and philosophy, corresponding with figures like Voltaire. His reign combined strict military discipline with intellectual ambition, shaping Prussia into a highly efficient state and leaving a lasting legacy on European political and military history.

The Fridericus-Rex-Grenadiermarsch was composed in the mid-1860s by the Prussian military musician Ferdinand Radeck. In its trio section, he incorporated a melody used by Carl Loewe in 1837 to set the ballad Fridericus Rex, written by Willibald Alexis. During a period of renewed Prussian expansion and admiration for Frederick the Great, both the march and the ballad became highly popular. Even today, the march remains one of the best-known German military marches and is still used by units such as the 10th Panzer Division and various training institutions of the Bundeswehr.
