This Hurricane-Earthquake combo may be a glimpse into the future

When tropical storm Hilary (once a category 4 hurricane!) made landfall in Southern California, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake simultaneously ruptured near Los Angeles at a depth of 4.8 km. Are the two geophysical events, one atmospheric and the other lithospheric, connected? To answer this question we turn our attention to Earth's plasma lithosphere and explore how strong meteorological disturbances (hurricanes, typhoons, tropical storms, tornado cells) and lithospheric disturbances like earthquake both have strong energetic connections to this highly-energetic uppermost part of our atmosphere.
