Voltaire or Spider-Man? With Great AI Power Comes Great Responsibility! Jørgensen Warns Europe

European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen opened his remarks with a famous line: “With great power comes great responsibility.” He joked that some say it came from Voltaire, others from Spider-Man — but whoever said it, the message matters deeply for Europe’s AI and energy future.

Speaking at the high-level signature event on the Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in Energy, Jørgensen warned that AI and digitalisation are transforming everyday life, global economies and Europe’s energy system.

But this digital revolution comes with a serious challenge: data centres already account for around 2.5% of EU electricity consumption, and by 2030 that demand is expected to more than double.

Jørgensen said Europe must find the right balance — securing digital sovereignty while using energy responsibly. The new roadmap sets out how AI can help make Europe’s energy systems cleaner, smarter, more secure and more competitive.

At the event, stakeholders signed a Declaration of Intent on the sustainable integration of data centres and the AI.grids collaboration agreement, creating a European community of practice for AI in electricity grids.

His message was clear: Europe must not depend on other global powers for the digital and energy solutions of the future. It must build them itself — responsibly, sustainably and in the European way.
