Return, O Backsliding Children | Saturday of 3rd Week of Lent Sermon on Repentance & Divine Mercy

In this powerful Lenten meditation, we reflect on God’s call to sinners: “Return, O backsliding children, for I am your husband and I will take you.”

The sermon explains three reasons why a sinner must abandon the road of sin and return to God:

Because the path of sin becomes abominable and filthy

Because continuing in sin leads to imminent spiritual danger

Because the soul must recover the grace that has been lost

Using vivid images—a traveler abandoning a muddy road, a merchant avoiding danger, and a sinner returning to wash his garment—this reflection reminds us that repentance is always possible through confession, penance, and God’s mercy.

The Gospel of the Woman Caught in Adultery (John 8) reveals the perfect harmony of divine mercy and divine justice. Christ does not condemn the sinner who repents but calls her to conversion:

“Neither do I condemn you. Go, and now sin no more.”

Lent is the time to return to the path of salvation, cleanse our conscience, and seek reconciliation with God.

As the saints teach:
Innocence is the first plank of salvation — penance is the second plank after shipwreck.
