ACL Artist profile: Michigander on Panic Attacks, Therapy, and Facing Your Monsters
@medicinalmediaorg partnered with the @HiHowAreYouProject backstage at #ACLFest 2023. The Hi, How Are You Project is an Austin, TX-based nonprofit organization with a mission to remove the stigma around mental health, one conversation at a time.
In 2015, Michigander began as Jason Singer, who cold-called college radio stations to play his songs. He released his debut single "Nineties" as Michigander in 2016. After feeling mostly fine on a personal level until his thirties, regular panic attacks then set in and altered everyday reality for Michigander. Being on the road touring was already a monstrous undertaking in and of itself, but with new mental health issues in the mix, life became more harrowing. These days, Michigander is facing his monsters, going to therapy regularly, and relying on his friends and crew for compassionate check-in conversations, which are made easier by his heart-on-his-sleeve way of existing.
