Parasitic therapeutics: ghastly or great for the heart? | Victoria Ward | TEDxGalway
While several are aware that heart attacks can result in death. What happens to the
human heart when it survives a heart attack? Victoria’s research involves developing
novel preventive strategies for heart failure which is the result of myocardial
infarction aka heart attacks. Victoria believes the solution lies in biomaterials. In
particular, the implementation of hyaluronic acid hydrogel combined with parasitic
secretion therapy. Victoria is a biomaterial researcher undertaking her PhD in University of Galway.
With a specialised degree in Anatomy, her research involves understanding what happens in the body when things go wrong, specifically after a heart attack. Her research strives to find new strategies to fix a failing heart.
Winner of University of Galway Innovation Office's Threesis in 2022, Victoria will go on to represent the university at this year’s national Threesis. Her research work is supported by Science Foundation Ireland AMBER centre. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
