A Life Saving Fish Screen for Lolo Creek
For nearly 100 years a single irrigation ditch on Lolo Creek in the Bitterroot Valley in western Montana led to the entrapment and death of 10,000 to 20,000 fish per year - more than any other ditch in western Montana. Fish biologists estimated that more than 95% of out-migrating salmonids were trapped and killed in this one ditch on an annual basis.
In 2021 the Clark Fork Coalition completed installation of an innovative, life-saving fish screen on Lolo Ditch, immediately reducing entrainment to zero. This is the story of that project and the people who made it possible.
