Waterford, CT’s Seaside Sanatorium Has a History of Hope and Harm #waterfordct #history

Once a coastal retreat for children with tuberculosis, the Seaside Sanatorium in Waterford, CT later became a state facility for the developmentally disabled—until reports of abuse and high death rates led to its closure in the 1990s. Designed by Cass Gilbert, the now-abandoned site was made a state park in 2014. In 2023, the state announced plans to demolish the historic buildings, with work expected to begin next year.
