'Jogi Jogiyan Ta Sang' by Mooralala Marwada

The story of a princess who gives up her palace and comforts to take the path of the wandering yogis is a mythic one in our culture. After Meera Bai, here is Raamkali. In her voice, the Sindhi Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai expresses his longing for detachment. Few people see clearly how wealth creates bondage.

It seems in his youth Latif wandered for several years with the Nathpanthi yogis, absorbing their way of life and being. This kaafi (form of Sufi verse) from Sur Raamkali describes the yearning of princess Raamkali for the yogis, her devastation when they left her one day to go on their wandering ways. The strains of Mooralala’s magical tambura sing of this longing.

Perhaps the most striking quality of Mooralalaji’s singing is an irrepressible and infectious joy. He has an endearing habit of bursting into song when the inspiration strikes, no matter where he is… on the street, in a bus, or on the phone!

Mooralala belongs to a lineage of Meghwal singers, who migrated from Rajasthan to Kutch about 300 to 400 years ago. Now settled in the village of Khadeer in Kutch, Mooralala says he’s an 11th generation singer, and that his ‘santaar’ (tambura) must be at least 130 years old! When he first heard the sound of the tambura, he recalls that he was 8 years old, and he was so enchanted, he couldn’t sleep! Currently his 12-year-old daughter Nandini, learns from and sings with him. He moves with ease between nirguni bhajans, traditional folk songs and Sufiana kalaam.
