'Chala Chali Ka Khela' by Mooralala Marwada
It’s all a game of come-and-go. Nothing stays; everything goes. All things are shot through with an imminent sense of departure – relationships, wealth, institutions and everything we carefully accumulate and attach ourselves to. In this poignant yet delightful song, Mooralala Marwada brings alive the truth of these simple and direct words of Brahmanand Swami, the saint-poet from Rajasthan who lived at the turn of the 18th century.

It was a very special night for all of us in the Kabir Project-Srishti community in Bangalore in March 2009. We had just finished a week-long festive immersion in the music and ideas of Kabir to launch the films, CDs and books we had created over 6 years of work.
Mooralala ji was new to the gathering then, and listening to him here are singers Fariduddin Ayaz and Shafi Fakir from Pakistan, Prahlad Tipanya and Kaluram Bamaniya from Malwa and Mukhtiyar Ali from Rajasthan… all dear friends made over the course of our work and gathered here amidst faculty, advisors, friends and seekers for one last night of sharing and communion, graciously hosted by Tara, Prem and Nina Chandavarkar at their residence in Bangalore.
Perhaps the most striking quality of Mooralalaji’s singing is an irrepressible and infectious joy. He has an endearing habit of bursting into song when the inspiration strikes, no matter where he is… on the street, in a bus, or on the phone! Mooralala belongs to a lineage of Meghwal singers, who migrated from Rajasthan to Kutch about 300 to 400 years ago. Now settled in the village of Khadeer in Kutch, Mooralala says he’s an 11th generation singer, and that his ‘santaar’ (tambura) must be at least 130 years old. He moves with ease between nirguni bhajans, traditional folk songs and Sufiana kalaam. Contact Mooralala at +91-87585-51661
