Spartan Laws: "No Retreat, No surrender"? -Battle of Plataea 479 BC and Battle of Sphacteria 425 BC

No retreat no surrender - that is Spartan law. A in-depth look at the Battle of Plataea and Battle of Sphacteria. Did the Spartans retreat at the battle of Plataea 479 BC and at the battle of Sphacteria 425 BC ? Were the Spartans allowed to retreat at all? King Leonidas did not retreat in 480 during the battle of Thermopylae, that’s a fact but why didn’t he? He definitely could have done it, since he was informed before he was encircled by the Persian forces. Many of his allies (yes there were in fact more than 300 Spartans at that battle) actually retreated to safety, while he stayed back. This gave rise to the popular opinion that Spartans never retreated, which would be very odd for a successful military society such as Sparta, hence we’d like to investigate this issue in this video. We will look at three major battles of the 5th century: The battle of Thermopylae (480 BC), Battle of Plataea (479 BC) and Battle of Sphacteria (480 BC) to get to the bottom of the Spartan retreat laws.
