So, let’s talk about my father-in-law. His name is Barry, but I’ve been calling him “81” since my wife and I got married. Why 81? Because it was his football jersey number in college.

Barry is respected and loved by so many people and I know it’s mainly because of how he treats people. He appreciates everyone as they are. I mean, come on...people decided to name a sports field named after him!

So, with my father-in-law’s birthday coming up I wanted to make him something that he would really enjoy.

Now every summer we get to go with him and my mother-in-law to northern Michigan for a few weeks of vacation. It’s an amazing place. It’s relaxing, the people are nice, the food is good and there’s plenty of fun stuff to do together. Other than his home, Michigan is his favorite place to be.

So, how do I bring Michigan to him? Because that would be a pretty cool birthday present.

We’ve been going to Michigan long enough that every time we drive on a certain road, he talks about how much he loves going over a specific hill. You can see hints of the town (Leland) we’re headed to, Lake Leelanau to the left, Lake Michigan in the distance and the sky just has a habit of looking amazing.

That idea is where this adventure started.

This project was a lot of fun and since it involved many quiet nights on a beach it gave me plenty of time to think about how individual moments add up.

It’s relatively easy to spend a night taking a bunch of photos and at the end of it all you have an image that represents all your effort. It’s a whole other, impossible thing to know all the ways one person impacts the lives of others over the years.

Not just 81’s, but yours and mine. We all affect others on a daily basis. The question is will you choose to have a positive impact? Just like 81 cares for people and treats them like individuals, we can do the same. It won’t always be easy, people won’t always appreciate it as much as you want them to, and what it looks like is going to be different for each of us, but it is a life worth living. And that’s one way that you can make for others.
