Prize winning Royal Navy pictures : Royal Navy photographers that deploy with warships and commando units worldwide have been recognised for their talent, dedication and creativity at the annual Peregrine Trophy awards in London. The event commends the best photography by sailors over the last 12 months and was this year held on board HMS Bulwark in London. Petty Officer Airman Photographer Mez Merrill took the Peregrine Trophy for his portfolio of work, including this image of Royal Naval personnel from 845 Naval Air Squadron on deployment in Aqaba, Jordan.

Joining up as any other rating into a particular trade such as logistics, engineering or warfare specialists, the sailors work hard to excel in their chosen field before being accepted into the elite photographic branch. The select few then work with the Royal Navy and Royal Marines on deployments anywhere in the world. Leading Airman Photographer Alex Knott was named Royal Navy Photographer of the Year 2014 for his portfolio, which included the Lynx from HMS Montrose carrying out a surface search in the Mediterranean

The winners of the categories are all congratulated by the First Sea Lord Admiral Sir George Zambellas. Leading Airman Photographer Dave Jenkins took the Media Operations category - awarded to the image that is judged to create the most impact as a news photograph - for this image of HMS Dragon's Mk8 Lynx Helicopter on a night flying serial, firing 60 flares over the ship as part of its sortie.

Chief Petty Officer (Photographer) Thomas McDonald won the Commandant General Royal Marines Prize for his shot of Royal Marines from 43 Commando on routine training drills in and around Glen Fruin.

The Maritime Air Prize, awarded for the best photograph of Royal Navy helicopters, was won by Leading Airman Photographer Nicky Wilson, who snapped a team of sailors and Royal Marines from HMS Illustrious working ashore on Sicogan Island in the Philippines. The personnel were helping the local population after the island suffered the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan. Aid was delivered courtesy of the Merlin Helicopter of 829 Naval Air Squadron and the Sea King from 845 Naval Air Squadron.

Chief Petty Officer Photographer Thomas McDonald won the Commandant General Royal Marines Prize, awarded for the best portfolio depicting Royal Marines related subjects. Pictured are Royal Marines from 43 Commando demonstrating their extensive military skills and capabilities while conducting low-level training in and around Glen Fruin, Scotland.

Leading Airman Photographer Maxine Davies took the Royal Navy, Royal Marines Charity Family and Friends Award for this image of Chief Petty Officer Cox, with his children Lucy and Harry, as they are reunited at the homecoming of HMS Richmond. This category encourages entrants to capture heart-warming moments between Naval Service personnel and their friends, family, children and loved ones.

This photograph shows Sgt Paul Collacott, Royal Marines Airman with 845 Naval Air Squadron, on flying operations in a Royal Navy SeaKing Mk4 helicopter over northern Norway. It forms part of the portfolio of Petty Officer Airman (Photographer) Mez Merrill, whose work won the Peregrine Trophy for 2014.

Another image from POA (Phot) Mez Merrill's portfolio shows Royal Navy personnel from Commando Mobile Air Operations conducting load lifting training in northern Norway. The Peregrine Trophy is awarded to the section or unit submitting the best portfolio of six prints (black and white and/or colour) of service-related subjects.

Leading Airman Photographer Alex Knott was awarded Royal Navy Photographer of the Year 2014.

Leading Airman Photographer Will Haigh took the Navy News Award - given to the photographer whose picture has had the most impact in the pages of Navy News.

Royal Navy SeaKIng Mk4 helicopters from 845 Naval Air Squadron operating in northern Norway - Mez Merrill

Warrant Officer 2nd Class Richard White won the RN Amateur Open Award for the single best photograph of a Royal Navy or Royal Marines theme.
