Biodynamic Composting at Patina Farm

Andrew Beedy, our Biodynamic Consultant, visited us yesterday, so we took the opportunity to have him share some of his knowledge with you. First thing we tackle is Composting. As Andrew mentions, it is one of the cornerstones of biodynamic farming. We are giving back to the soil.
I apologize for the barking dog, but I felt this video had too much good information so I had to put it up!

A few important points:
• we layer the carbon material (straw, garden clippings, kitchen scraps) with the manure in a 1:7 ratio (one part manure to 7 parts carbon). •We water the pile as we make the layers, soaking the pile. •We add trace minerals (azomite and a soft rock phosphate) as well as herbs
• Each pile sits for about six weeks. • We cover the pile with Compost fabric from CV Compost in Vermont to maintain the temperature and the moisture.
• We want the temperature of the pile to stay between 120 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. If it gets too hot, we add water and uncover the pile. • after six weeks, the pile is turned over into another stall, and we start a new compost pile.
Our piles are probably bigger than yours so Ricardo, our gardener has to use a front loader small tractor to turn the piles.Each pile is turned over three times, and after six months the compost can be used to enrich the soil. • We use our compost around our veggies, fruit trees and roses.
