Finally making olive waste compost in Italy!! Yay!!
A year in the planning and some ups and downs finally brought us to realizing our dream of turning our olive mill waste into compost!
Olive mill waste, which is often dumped by olive presses on unused land near crops and waterways rather than pay the fee to have it safely removed, is a serious bio hazard when left raw and untreated. Alternatively, with a few simple precautions you can safely turn the waste into a viable fertilizer for your olive trees...this is what we did with this year's waste!!
The industry produces around 9 million tonnes of waste annually with only a small amount of that being recycled, composted or repurposed.
This year we managed to compost around 8 cubic meters of this waste...much more than we actually produced!!
