The colonial city of Paraty was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, for its unique mixture of historical and natural wealth. It is the first mixed place (cultural and natural heritage) in Brazil.
Because it is located almost at sea level, the city was designed taking into account the flow of the tides. As a result, many of its streets are periodically flooded by the tide.
The streets of the Historic Center of Paraty are the most harmonious colonial architectural ensemble in the country.
According to IPHAN, Paraty is the second tourist pole in the state of Rio de Janeiro and the 17th in the country.
An important and nationally known attraction that takes place in Paraty is the Paraty International Literary Festival (FLIP), with the presence of national and foreign writers who participate in lectures and debates in historic buildings or in armed tents on the streets.

A cidade colonial de Paraty foi declarada Patrimônio da Humanidade pela Unesco, por sua mistura única de riquezas históricas e naturais. Trata-se do primeiro lugar misto (patrimônio cultural e natural) do Brasil.
