Penedo is a neighborhood and ecological park in the municipality of Itatiaia, located in the southern region of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro.
Its peaceful inns, its mild climate, its generous fauna and topography make Penedo an oasis amid the growth and occupation of the region.

It is the main Finnish colony in Brazil, which is still remarkable in the architecture of residences and commercial buildings, as well as in the local culture.

Tourism has transformed the first full boarding houses into a network of 52 hotels and 39 restaurants, cafeterias and bars. However, the number of Finns currently living in Penedo is not even two dozen, and there is a great concern to preserve the Finnish presence. For this purpose, the Club Finland, founded in 1943, has performed at whose dances on Saturdays the Group of Traditional Dances is presented, and which since 1993 houses the Finnish Museum of Dona Eva, where old and modern pieces of art can be seen. the culture of Finland. The museum has received about 500 visitors a month. Today Penedo is focused on romantic tourism for couples over 30 years old, who like to enjoy good cheeses and wines.

History
Toivo Uuskallio, the creator and founder of the Finnish Colony of Penedo, in his book "On the journey towards the magic of the tropics", says that he received a call to leave his homeland and emigrate to the distant South. Called this one that arrived in a mysterious way, at night.

And so, in the middle of 1927, Toivo and his wife Liisa embarked for Brazil, accompanied by three boys, who shared their ideals.

They intended to live in Brazil, where the climate allows for a more natural life, enjoying the beneficial sun rays. Vegetarian food and abstaining from alcohol, tea and coffee were also part of his life program.

In 1929 he bought Fazenda Penedo, located in the Paraíba Valley, then district of the city of Resende to found the colony.

The colony
There is no nominal record in Penedo of those who came, but between September 1, 1927 and October 16, 1940, 296 Finns arrived at the port of Rio de Janeiro, registered 208 as immigrants. The period of greatest flow was the year 1929 when 122 settlers arrived. In 1930 there were still 21, and in 1931, 23. In the remainder of the period, which ended with the beginning of World War II, arrivals were small, except in 1938, when 19 immigrants arrived.

The group of Finns lived in community. They practiced subsistence farming, and cultivated orange seedling nurseries, the sale of which was the main source of income for the colony. They worked the land in various ways, in search of success. And, acting together, buying rations and food wholesale, they ended up forming an informal cooperative. This informal cooperative was the basis of the current Club Finland, founded in 1943.

Around the 1930s and 40s, the Penedo hotel industry started. The Colony, with its blond inhabitants and different customs, the sauna they introduced, their balls with polka, mazurk and tangos, attracted people. The first hotel in Penedo started to operate at Casa Grande.
Increasing the movement, the Finns began to receive guests in their homes as well.

The good food, and the simple and pleasant life made the visitors to return and recommend to their friends. And with the expansion of the houses, the pensions of D. Lídia, D. Hilja, D. Siiri and D. Liisa were born.
