STRANDED IN GREENLAND! (Coping with the unexpected realities of Arctic travel) | Nuuk 🇬🇱

After two days in Nuuk, it was time to leave Greenland...or so I thought.

Travel in the Arctic is wrought with uncertainty, and is dependent on multiple variables. Most airports in the Arctic rely on visual flight rules (VFR), meaning that if pilots cannot visually see the runway, they cannot land - no matter how large the airport or how advanced the plane may be.

Such was the case for my departure, when an extremely low ceiling, coupled with extremely powerful winds (gusting to 100 kph) meant that flights out of Nuuk were cancelled en masse. My flight to the international hub airport at Kangerlussuaq was quickly cancelled, and I was faced with the unexpected news: I'd be stranded in Nuuk for three days, until the weather system passed through.

Thankfully, Air Greenland was kind enough to take very good care of me, and provided me with free hotel, meal, and taxi vouchers, meaning that my only out-of-pocket costs for the weather delay amounted to less than $100 USD. Rolling with the punches is part and parcel of the Arctic experience, and I wasn't bothered by this in the slightest. Having lived in Nunavut for three years and this not being my first rodeo, I have come to learn that when travelling the Arctic, the question is not "will my flight be cancelled today?" but rather "which flights won't be cancelled?"
