One of the oldest towns in both Kazakhstan and Central Asia, Turkestan is the crown jewel of the Silk Road. It was founded around 490 and reached its heyday in the 12th century. Encircled by formidable defensive systems, Turkestan served as the capital and administrative hub for several Central Asian dynasties, including the Timurids, Shaybanids, Mongols, and Khwarezm shahs. Situated at the intersection of trade routes and the meeting point of nomadic and settled civilizations, it served as the capital of the Kazakh khanate throughout the 16th and 18th centuries. Distinguished guests from other states watched the magnificent khan enthronement festivities held in the city.

The name of the dervish, Sufi preacher, and poet Khoja Ahmed Yassawi, who resided in the area, helped the city gain notoriety around the world. Amir Timur ordered the construction of the imposing mausoleum over the saint's humble burial, which, 233 years later, became a site of pilgrimage comparable to Mecca, thereby establishing Turkestan as a Muslim relic.

The Khoja Ahmed Yassawi Mausoleum is the pinnacle of medieval architectural design. There are thirty different chambers and halls in this magnificent complex of palaces and temples. The main dome is over 40 meters in exterior diameter, 130 meters in circumference, and 12 meters in height with the minarets. The remarkably gorgeous elements include the elegant décor, the patterns on the ceilings, and the colorful mosaics. The monument is state-protected and has been returned to its original state. In Turkestan, everyone gets the opportunity to view the crown jewel of the Middle East.

People believe that the road to Turkestan should necessarily include the mausoleum of Arystan-Baba, erected over the tomb of Akhmad Yassawi. According to the legend, the elder was an associate of the Prophet Mohammed and lived for 500 years to pass his knowledge and wisdom of the Prophet to Khoja Ahmed Yassawi. In the 16th century, Yassy received its modern name of Turkestan. Dozens of ancient towns, settlements, and religious structures decorate the vicinities of Turkestan; each monument is unique in its own way.
