Capybaras have evolved to eat a high fibre, low nutrient diet consisting primarily of grasses. In their natural habitat, 70% of their diet consists of grasses; they also eat sedges and the bark of bushes, etc. Bark is not only nutritious it is also very good for their teeth. In their natural habitat, during the dry season, capybaras graze for 45% of the day, and during the rainy season, when vegetation is more abundant, they graze for 31% of the day. Capybaras often graze at dusk and at night to avoid predators. Capybaras, like horses, have hypsodont teeth, which means they grow continually and need to be kept in check by chewing on coarse foods. Wild grass has been described as like sandpaper to a horse or capybara's teeth.
