Chattanooga School Teacher's Philadelphia Visit to Include Papal Viewing
When Pope Francis comes to the United States next week, he will make history, including being the first Pope to ever address Congress.. he'll also visit President Obama at the White house, and speak at the 9-11 Memorial.
We found out one local family will be attending one of his events.
Pope Francis is noted for his humility, his devotion to helping the poor.
He's less formal than his predecessors, leading many Catholics and non-Catholics alike to call him "the People's Pope."
During his visit to the United States next week, there's one family from Chattanooga hoping to catch his eye.
Last year Maggie Burns signed her family up for the World Meeting of Families Congress in Philadelphia. The purpose of the Congress among Catholic families is to bring them together spiritually. "Pray together, to work hard together and to give to others and be of service," she says.
Imagine her excitement when she was told that everybody who had registered for the Congress, will now also get tickets to see Pope Francis during his papal visit to Philadelphia in a week. "I'm sure I will be overwhelmed and tearful and joyful, feeling very blessed," says Mrs. Burns.
Her daughters can't wait, too. Maizie wants to hear from the man often referred to as the People's Pope. "I'm excited to hear what he has to say," she says. Her sister Emma has a different idea. "I'm probably going to buy a lot of merchandise and stuff," she says.
In Mrs. Burns 7th grade language class, a lot of her students are wishing the family well. "It's very exciting," says Maddy Lundberg. "I'd really like to go but I can't... I gotta go to school." "Are you jealous?" we asked Matias Ron. "Yes" came the immediate answer.
And what's the one question to put to the People's Pope? "Will you take a selfie with me?" would be the question Matias would ask.
This Pope would probably do it.
Maggie Burns says, he's just that kind of Pontiff, and she can't wait to see him. "He is a game changer as a pope," she says "and I will cherish the memory of having the opportunity of just being in the proximity of him."
The papal visit begins on Tuesday in Washington. On Thursday, Pope Francis will speak to a joint session of Congress. On Friday, he'll be at several venues in New York City, and on Saturday during his events in Philadelphia, he'll greet people along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and in that crowd, will be one family from Chattanooga, Tennessee, paying their respects.
