12 Police officers back in original assignments while under investigation of misconduct

Twelve Chattanooga police officers have been assigned to their original positions, following reassignments due to that fact that they couldn't testify before a judge, according to CPD.

Their review will continue.

Senior Advisor Kirsten Yates gave the following statement on behalf of the city:

"The City and the Chattanooga Police Department are continuing to collaborate closely with employee groups to finalize the details of the internal review process for each of the 15 affected officers. As part of this collaboration, CPD has granted those officers the option to fulfill their originally assigned duties while the review process is underway.

As previously stated, the review process involves evaluation by an internal committee of each officer’s assignment through the lens of their career and previously sustained relevant violation. The committee will provide a recommendation to Chief Murphy, who will make the final decision on the affected officers’ assignments."

On behalf of the individual members of the Fraternal Order of Police, Janie Parks Varnell from Davis & Hoss, says:

Through a public records request, our newsroom obtained detailed information about the Chattanooga Police Department officers reassigned by new Police Chief Celeste Murphy.

We received letters notifying the Hamilton County District Attorney and the U.S. Attorney of the internal investigations for the initial 10 reassigned officers. We later learned there are a total of 15 officers affected.

We are not publishing the names of the officers in this story at this time, as we comb through each individual case, the allegation, and the outcome.

Each of the 10 letters we obtained say an internal investigation resulted in an allegation against the officer of "misconduct bearing upon truthfulness, bias or integrity."
