Chilewich Uses New York City Design in Chatsworth

A Chatsworth company is coupling New York City design with North Georgia expertise. Inside the Chilewich factory, a little bit of the big time has set up shop in Chatsworth. €œPeople that do samples, adhesives, technical backing, it's all up here,€ says co-owner Joe Sultan, €œso we found a phenomenal knowledge base in Northwest Georgia.Sultan and his wife Sandy, who carries the Chilewich name, use a woven vinyl textile to make hundreds of different products that are sold around the world in stores like Bloomingdales, Macy€™s, Crate and Barrel, Sur la Table, and then probably every design store in the country.Perhaps their most popular product, their modern placemats, are produced in a collage of colors. The 3 to 400 thousand rolls of textile, that Chilewich buys every year from an Alabama company, are cut down to a manageable size. Then the edges are sealed and each mat is moved, labeled, bagged and boxed.All under the watchful eye of employees like Susan Brooks. It's cool just to know that what we have is not being done anywhere else,€ Brooks says, €œand we make a product that people love.A product so popular, the company is adding more processes in house, which means more jobs to fill. €œThere are so many companies that go overseas,€ manager Matthew Barnes says. €œAnd they figure they can save a dollar here, save a dollar there.
