Warming Up for Running Races and Workouts, 10 Steps

10-Step Warm Up Guide for Runners

1. Find a home base for your gear, double check all gear
2. Put on your warm-up outerwear: Long-sleeve, pants or tights, hats, gloves, etc.
3. Put on your training socks and training shoes (not racing shoes)
4. Walk 1 mile
5. Jog 2 miles
6. Stretch
7. Put on your racing socks and racing shoes
8. Run four 120 meter strides
9. Hydrate / nutrition
10. Arrive at starting line 3-5 minutes ahead of time and run one more stride, walk back to starting line

My warm-up routine is nothing earth-shattering, but there are a few hidden wrinkles that I do believe could help all the runners out there. The hidden tip of the day for running race warm-up routine is at about the 12-minute mark of the video. Probably the biggest take away is take care of your feet. Your feet are everything in running, and we must take care of our feet, unlike any other sport. Running shoes play different roles, and so do socks. We must keep our feet as dry as possible before we actually arrive at the starting line. Mud, sweat, rain, dew, is your enemy in the game of running. Blisters can pop up at any time in the running world. Runners who warm up properly and take care of their feet have a much higher likelihood of unleashing a successful race.
