Bernie and Burl's offroad adventure May 20th 2023

Two first time off road events:

Bernie borrows my CRF 300 Rally and does very well on his first ever proper offroad ride, and I am riding my daily bike, a KTM 790 Adventure on ROAD tyres, and I have never taken it off road before.

We join the Old Shaftesbury Drove Road heading West from Salisbury Racecourse towards Shaftesbury. This is an old stage coach route over the hills and is generally good going and firm under the gravel. We had to negotiate some fairly deep water in places as you will see, and the end of the off road section is a very steep descent around 1 in 4 on loose scree and is not for the faint hearted on road tyres!

The CRF is completely stock apart from a Koubalink 2" lowering kit and side stand. The tyres, although they look knobbly are 80% road, 20% off road, and are totally NOT suited to mud, though fine on gravel, so the heavy rain 3 days before left some wet sections that were quite challenging for grip.

After this experience, I will almost certainly be repalcing these tyres with 50/50s on the CRF and some more off road focussed tyres on the KTM.
