Euglena Species An Algal bloom Organism Capable of Killing Fish Life
Euglena species, some of which have been shown recently to be implicated in toxic algal blooms. Toxic products shown to kill fish. These Euglenoids in this video were taken from a bloom. However, it was not determined if this species shown here produces any toxin.
The red "eye" spot (Stigma), which is not an eye but an organ capable of sensing light, enabling the protist to move to regions of high light intensity. When the sun shines brightly on the water's surface the Euglena can collect in astronomical numbers, forming a bright green scum. Capable of photosynthesis but also feeding. The flagella is not necessary for locomotion.
