Alpine Alpenglow Hy4 is hydrogen powered

Alpine, Renault's performance brand, is pushing the boundaries of sustainable automotive technology with its latest innovation, the Alpenglow Hy4. This running prototype is a significant evolution from the static 2022 Alpenglow concept, showcasing a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that delivers 340 horsepower and revs up to 7,000 rpm. The engine is uniquely configured to run on hydrogen, utilizing three tanks that hold 4.6 pounds of hydrogen at 700 bar of pressure, paired with a sequential transmission to optimize power delivery.

The Hy4 is not merely a concept but a functional prototype set to make its public debut at the six-hour endurance race at Spa-Francorchamps, marking its entry into the FIA WEC 2024 season. This will be followed by a showcase at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans in June. Alpine has also hinted at future developments, including an all-new V-6 engine designed specifically for hydrogen applications, suggesting a larger variant possibly named the Hy6 could be unveiled in late 2024.

While currently a track-only vehicle, Alpine is exploring the potential of this hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine for road use. With modifications like a two-seat cabin and enhanced aerodynamics, the Hy4 represents a forward-thinking approach to combining performance with sustainability in the automotive industry.
