Celebrating 50 Years of Porsche Turbo at Retro Classics 2024
A visit to Porsche at the Retro Classics in Stuttgart is a highly anticipated event for classic car aficionados and sports car enthusiasts. This year, from April 25th to 28th, 2024, Porsche will mark a significant milestone by celebrating "Beyond Performance – 50 Years of Porsche Turbo." This grand celebration will showcase the iconic evolution of Porsche Turbo models, featuring a range of extraordinary exhibits that highlight the innovative spirit of the brand.
The roots of Porsche's Turbo legacy can be traced back to 1974 when the first series 911 Turbo was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. This marked the beginning of a new era, blending motorsport technology with series production. Among the highlights of the exhibit at Retro Classics will be the very first 911 Turbo, known as the Porsche 911 Turbo “No. 1”. This unique model, a gift to Louise Piëch, stands as a testament to Porsche’s pioneering approach and historical significance.
The celebration will include a special event on Saturday, April 27th. At 2 PM, Thomas Krickelberg, Project Manager in the 911/718 model line, and Frank Jung, Head of the Company Archive, will join Monegasque racing driver and Le Mans winner Stéphane Ortelli for a discussion about the Turbo’s legacy. Following the talk, Ortelli will be available for autograph sessions, offering a personal touch to the event.
Visitors can immerse themselves in Porsche’s rich history at Stand A74 in Hall 1, where an array of rare and iconic Turbo models will be displayed. Among them is a 911 Turbo 3.0 Coupé from 1975, one of the first 30 Turbos produced. This Silver Green Diamond car exemplifies the early craftsmanship with its hand-welded wider wings and color-matched mirrors.
Another standout is the 911 GT2 from 1996, a car designed with performance at its core. Its lightweight build, with aluminum doors and bonnet, and a powerful biturbo engine, ensured optimal performance on the track. Additionally, the 911 GT1 ‘98, a lightweight racer with a carbon-fiber monocoque, will be showcased, highlighting Porsche's engineering prowess and racing heritage.
The exhibit will also feature modern marvels like the 911 Turbo S “Duet” from 2020, a collaboration with Embraer that melds aviation aesthetics with automotive excellence. This limited-edition model, produced in just ten units, underscores Porsche’s commitment to innovation and exclusivity.
Beyond the cars, Porsche will present two engine exhibits representing different Turbo generations, and a range of archival materials, including the original Turbo logo drawing and vintage advertisements. The museum shop will offer exclusive Turbo-themed merchandise, allowing visitors to take home a piece of Porsche history.
This celebration of 50 years of Porsche Turbo at Retro Classics 2024 is not just an exhibition but a homage to the brand’s relentless pursuit of performance and innovation, captivating enthusiasts and reaffirming Porsche’s legacy in the automotive world.
