Himig Handog: ASAP Pinoy Mini-Documentary

Through the years, Himig Handog is undeniably the biggest and longest-running songwriting competition in the Philippines. It has produced numerous songs written by both seasoned and up-and-rising Filipino composers from different parts of the Philippines and of the world, in which some of it topped various music charts during and after the contest and have gone to be theme songs of teleseryes, movies, and even commercials. This also paved the way for both songwriters and interpreters to be known in the industry and to be offered more projects.

According to Star Music Audio Content Head Jonathan Manalo, whose career as a composer and producer for Star Records started after he himself was one of Himig Handog contestants, it began in 2000 as a search for the anthem that would accompany the winning moments of Pinoy national and modern heroes, thus dubbed as “Himig Handog sa Bayaning Pilipino”. It was his stint in its 2001 staging – Himig Handog sa Makabagong Kabataan – that brought the multi-awarded songwriter to where he is now through his winning piece “Tara Tena”, interpreted by Kyla and Kaya featuring V3.

From 2003 to 2004, the theme changed into “Love Songs”, and this became the perennial theme up to its revival in 2013. This edition gave birth to some of the hits that we still enjoy and find completely relatable to our “hugot” in love, such as the songs performed by the ASAP mainstays alongside their guest artists in a post-Valentine’s Day production number two years ago, namely “Kung Ako Ba Siya?” (2002), “O, Pag-ibig” (2016), “Hindi Na Bale” (2002), “Ano’ng Nangyari Sa Ating Dalawa” (2013), “Hanggang” (2002), and “Kung Ako Nalang Sana” (2002).

In this documentary, some of the composers shared their personal (and even not) stories that inspired their compositions and talked about their creative process in writing and arranging their entries, as well as their whole Himig Handog gig. Besides, some of the singers and bands who lent their voices and musical talents in interpreting the participating songs also imparted their experience in collaborating with the songwriters and being part of the enormous and popular musical competition.
