Woodland Photography with a 100-400mm Lens | I LOVE this lens!
Spring comes early in the woods here every year, the trout lilies just came up and I had a short period of time on this day before sunset to capture them. This time, I wanted to try the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens to see if I could photograph the small flowers from several feet away. I absolutely love the results, it’s not easy to find a good composition in the woods but the point was to see if the lens would be able to focus on the small flowers in a chaotic scene from a distance.
My approach with the telephoto lens was to get down to the ground as low as possible (without having to sit on the dusty trails) my aperture stays at it’s widest - f/5.6 at 400mm. Whilst their was plenty of sunshine since most of the trees are still bare, I chose to shoot the flowers that are in areas of shade provided by the larger tree trunks. These areas are dark, so I needed a higher ISO but I wanted to keep it lower than 800. I was able to keep the heavy lens steady, and there was little to no wind, so I kept the shutter speed somewhere around 1/100th of a second or a bit faster.
